Young men tell Dr. Ken Anderson they won’t care what they look like at 40. He explains the psychology of aging: the feeling of youth and vitality never goes away. What changes is the guy in the mirror. If you’re losing hair in your 20s, this reframe matters before you make any decision.
When I’m 50 now, and I know I had my first surgery at 22, 23, I’m still as concerned now about my hair as I was back then. I’ve had patients young men, you know, 25, 26, and who say, "I will not be caring about what I look like when I’m 40." Yeah. Because they think that 40 is old. Yeah. I still work out. I still play hockey. I still get up in the morning and I’m ready to go. And uh I still you know, I think a lot of younger guys feel that when they get older, they’re going to like psychologically have this transformation where they’re going to be like, "Okay, I’m ready for the cane and walker." Yeah. No, that that feeling of youth and vitality of of being alive and wanting to take it take over the world, that never goes away. Now, what changes is the guy in the mirror. Yeah. Yeah, I know. And so, I have to sort of uh help these patients sometime understand like, "No, you will you’re going to care more about what you look like when you’re 40 as opposed to now because the inside you, you know, who you are, that life force never really changes."
