About this video

Getting a hair transplant too young can backfire, here’s why prevention must come first. Start with medical therapy. Stabilize the loss. Then we talk surgery.

Transcript

A hair transplant surgery at 22 years of age is something I consider to be unethical. It’s just too young. You don’t know where the hair loss is going to end up.

Hair loss that starts before the age of 35 is always going to be more aggressive. And if he had come to see me, I would have turned him away. A hair transplant does absolutely nothing to stop the progression of hair loss.

So in young patients, I’d want to make sure that we have control of the hair loss with at least one year of preventive therapy. So, if you’re young watching this, you’re going to want to get on preventive therapy like topical minoxidil, finasteride, a laser cap. All three are better than either one alone.

Only after we are sure that it is stable and the patient is at least 25 years of age would I even consider moving forward with a hair transplant.
